about

Stagga was one of the true auteurs of British Bass music, both unique and groundbreaking with his style, yet rarely spoken of outside an inner circle of supporters who stretched across the Bass music spectrum.

From fellow Dubstep pioneers such as Mala, N Type, RSD and Rusko over to the LA Beat scene with the likes of Daedelus and Gaslamp Killer dropping his tracks, not to mention D-Styles who first inspired Stagga to buy a set of decks and take up turntablism. There's also the new school of experimentalists, G Jones, Liquid Stranger and Salva for example, as well as forward thinking rappers like Foreign Beggars and E L U C I D.

If you add the support he had throughout the BBC’s most esteemed tastemakers, Mary Anne Hobbs, Gilles Peterson, Huw Stephens to mention just a few. it might seem surprising that he never became a household name but he was not the kind of person to chase fame or fortune. He was a humble soul who shied away from the spotlight and spent more time on supporting the many rappers, singers, producers and DJ’s around him (amongst others, Drum N Bass legend High Contrast credits him with being a massive influence on his career).

Sadly this is all in past tense because on December 23rd 2020, Stagga left this planet for good. We’re still in shock, none of it seems real and it certainly wasn’t expected, but his family and friends are certain that he would still want the world to hear this, his last ever solo EP which he had originally planned to release on Boxing Day.

In many ways Call The Cops is the perfect swan song. After his Jungle Zen album, where he revisited his junglist roots, we’re back to a sound that is unmistakably Stagga. Warped lazer noises slide back and forth like a futuristic theremin over apocalyptic basslines and crisp beats that sit somewhere between trap, dubstep and 80’s era Schoolly D. There are still echoes of jungle too, especially in the chopped and screwed dancehall samples of both Ride The Punanni and RIP, the closing tune that we believe was a tribute to a number of friends within the Cardiff scene who had recently lost their lives, but which proved to be eerily prescient as the final number of this release. It's fair to say that nobody ever quite sounded like Stagga, and nobody ever will.

All proceeds of this EP will go to Stagga’s fiance Nina and two children Loki and Blue, there is also talk of releasing some of the finished tracks on his computer and some of the outstanding collaborations he had planned, including a new Stagga & Magugu EP so do follow and keep an eye out for those. Many thanks to those of you who supported Stagga throughout the years, we know for a fact that it really meant a lot to him, let’s all ensure the music lives on forever, Rest In Power to an absolute don.
